Caterpillars are not my friend

What’s wrong with the picture?

You can see the culprit on the left side of the pot. He has some smaller friends around in there somewhere. I can’t believe the polished off every last leaf.

Guess I’ll have to start some more. Now, where did I put those seeds?

Colby K’s 9 | Rangers win 3-2

Rangers started the season off well.

Colby struck out 9 through 6 innings of work, giving up 2 in the 6th.

Kinsler scored on a Hamilton sac fly in the first. He scored again in the 3rd with the first Rangers home run of the season. Adam Dunn hit a solo home run in the sixth for the White Sox, while Rios scored from first on a single by Alexei Ramirez.

It was Michael Young’s eventual game winning single in the bottom of the 6th that drove in Hamilton with the go ahead run.

In the 7th, it was Ogando, back in the bullpen this year, striking out the side. If he continues to be this effective, then it will be a 6 inning game against the Rangers again this year.

Joe Nathan made his Rangers debut, needing only 11 pitches to get out of the 9th, striking out Gordon Beckham, and getting his first save.

Napoli stuck out 3 times, while Nelson Cruz and David Murphy each stuck out twice.

From the reports, Nolan Ryan went and visited with new Sox skipper Robin Ventura before the game. So, is everything finally cool between them now? I hope not. Otherwise, this just won’t have the same affect on me.

Opening Day

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh… people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

It’s finally here. After heading to the World Series for two consecutive years, the Rangers will hit the field today.

It’s time for the home whites and the blue ball caps.

After reading tweets about people out at the temple at 8:30 am this morning, already tailgating and soaking in the atmosphere, I couldn’t help but get chills. It’s game 1 of 162. It’s time to put game 6 of the 2011 Fall Classic behind us. As disappointing as it was, there are no more what if’s. It’s time to defend the American League title.

I grew up on baseball. I played baseball as a kid. Dad and mom took my sister and me to a few Rangers games growing up at the old Arlington Stadium. The biggest memory I have was when Dad sent me along with my sister (I was probably 5 or 6) with some money to get some ice cream in the plastic helmet. We got lost on our way back. So lost, that most our our ice cream was melted by the time we got back to our seats.

Cobra takes the mound today at 1:05pm (CST)

The West has changed substantially. You could say there is a growing rivalry between the Angels and the Rangers. We signed Vladimir in ’10, and stole Napoli (#napnapwiener) in ’11 from the Angels. They signed CJ, who became a free agent this past off season, and brought in Pujols from the Cardinals. We’ve added Joe Nathan as closer and moved Feliz into the rotation and brought in Yu from Japan.

I really don’t know what this season will bring. Will Josh miss half the season? Will Young continue his .300+ avg from last season? Will Mitch bust out his bat this year? Is Feliz over his game 6 meltdown and can he be dominate as a stater? Will Yu turn into the ace that the Rangers front office think he’ll be? Will Cruz pull a hamstring and miss 6 weeks? Will they win the West? Or slide into the playoffs in the new wildcard slot?

I only have two word for you.

Bring. It.

The Old Ladies

Back when we lived in an apartment some 6 years ago, I purchased a tiny little mini rose to set on the back porch. When we moved into our house I put it into the ground. The first year it did fairly well, but ever since then it went down hill. This past summer I dug it up and put it in a pot. I must say, it loves living in the pot. It hasn’t had this many buds in a long time.

Got this one after Stephanie’s grandmother died in April 2010. It struggled the first year, but has been a beauty ever since.

Ashleigh’s rose. We planted this one after the passing of over daughter in May 2010. Massive blooms. I’ve wanted to move this one to a different location, but it has always been prolific in putting out new flowers where it is that I just left.

This is another mini rose that I got for Stephanie for Valentine’s Day last year. It’s a win-win for both of us. After the holiday, I got to plant it. This sits next to the other mini rose.

Planted this one back in January. Still pretty small, but there is a bud on it. So there’s that…

Monday Morning Scramble

* Things have been busy around here this last week. So much so that I never got a chance to sit down and write anything. The weather is warming up pretty fast. Got up to 90* on Sunday. I’m anxious to start harvesting things in the garden, but there is nothing to pick or dig up.

* A week ago, we went out to Whole Foods with Stephanie’s parents. Somehow I left with a Vitamix blender. I must say, this thing is AMAZING. If you can’t think it, this thing to make. Healthy cheese topping (that is extremely HOT) for some macaroni? Done. Ice Cream? Done. Grind wheat berries into flour? Done. Blend up some turkey into baby food? Done. I’ll have to get some pictures soon.

* While at Whole Foods, we picked up a whole chicken. Stephanie had never cooked a whole chicken before, but I figured it couldn’t be that hard since its just a smaller turkey. After we ate the meat from it, everything in the pan got put in a crock pot and Stephanie made some pretty great smelling stock.

Showing off her handy work!

Fresh ingredients from the garden. Sage, rosemary, basil, oregano.

* Grilling. I finally got a new grill. The last one, which we’ve had since we moved into our house in 2007, finally bit the dust. It cost the same to buy parts as it did to just buy a new one. So to save some hassle…

* About a month or so ago, I promised Zoe that we would set up the pool when it got warmer and gave a round time estimate of 4 weeks. Unfortunately, the kid is pretty smart and continually asked how many weeks were left. Since it was a decent weekend, I went ahead and set the pool up last Friday night. We finally got in the pool Saturday afternoon. I must say, my baby maker was pretty close to falling off. It was pretty cold. Sunday was much better as the water had warmed substantially.

I’m pretty sure I’ll have Zoe doing some sort of swimming by the end of the summer. She is almost a foot taller than last year. She really wants to go under water, but still doesn’t get the concept of having to hold her breath and her attempts resulted in choking on water multiple times.

Grayson obviously had to test the water temperature. Still pretty cold for him come in.

* I fixed the toilet yesterday. The flush handle had finally come completely off and pulling the tank cover to raise the flapper so it was flush was a bit to white trash for me, so I broke down and spent the 8 bucks on a replacement. Lets not forget, a new cushy seat. All these new things make it feel I’m using another persons restroom.

* Made homemade strawberry jelly last night. Got 2 batches (12 half pints) done. I think we still have another 2 batches left to make. We did this last year and have not purchased store bought jelly since.

* This week? It’s already starting out busy at work. I want to show you the progress on two tomato plants that I put in the newly harvested compost (nutrients do miracles). Electrical project? Wednesday I’ll be over at Sprout.

//Grab a shovel. I’ll see you in the backyard.
