Monday Morning Scramble

*Grayson took his first steps by himself last night.

It seems like yesterday that we were trying to get Zoe to take her first steps. They grow up fast.

*It might seem as though the Texas Rangers have struggled the last month. Having won only 4 of the last 10 games for the beginning of June, last year they slumped just as bad and look where they ended up in October. Just saying.

*My sister came into town this past weekend to spend some time with mom and dad. Though, everyone knows the real reason was to hang out with Zoe and Grayson. I can’t blame her. She stayed with mom and dad the whole weekend, so to maximize ‘Aunt T bonding time’, we let Zoe and Grayson spend the night on Friday. Zoe loves Aunt T. She honestly can’t get enough of her. Saturday I ended up bringing Grayson home and left Zoe with the girls to get their nails done. Zoe spent a second night over there and it was rather quite. Being away from Zoe for a night is cool. Not ready for 2 nights or even a week.

*Stephanie was issued an iPad from her work a week or so ago, which leaves her Android tablet vacant and free for me to takeover. With this here laptop on typing to write this blog, or my phone that has a wordpress app and everything else I can think of, so I haven’t figured out a use for the tablet yet.

Monday Morning Scramble

* Things have been busy around here this last week. So much so that I never got a chance to sit down and write anything. The weather is warming up pretty fast. Got up to 90* on Sunday. I’m anxious to start harvesting things in the garden, but there is nothing to pick or dig up.

* A week ago, we went out to Whole Foods with Stephanie’s parents. Somehow I left with a Vitamix blender. I must say, this thing is AMAZING. If you can’t think it, this thing to make. Healthy cheese topping (that is extremely HOT) for some macaroni? Done. Ice Cream? Done. Grind wheat berries into flour? Done. Blend up some turkey into baby food? Done. I’ll have to get some pictures soon.

* While at Whole Foods, we picked up a whole chicken. Stephanie had never cooked a whole chicken before, but I figured it couldn’t be that hard since its just a smaller turkey. After we ate the meat from it, everything in the pan got put in a crock pot and Stephanie made some pretty great smelling stock.

Showing off her handy work!

Fresh ingredients from the garden. Sage, rosemary, basil, oregano.

* Grilling. I finally got a new grill. The last one, which we’ve had since we moved into our house in 2007, finally bit the dust. It cost the same to buy parts as it did to just buy a new one. So to save some hassle…

* About a month or so ago, I promised Zoe that we would set up the pool when it got warmer and gave a round time estimate of 4 weeks. Unfortunately, the kid is pretty smart and continually asked how many weeks were left. Since it was a decent weekend, I went ahead and set the pool up last Friday night. We finally got in the pool Saturday afternoon. I must say, my baby maker was pretty close to falling off. It was pretty cold. Sunday was much better as the water had warmed substantially.

I’m pretty sure I’ll have Zoe doing some sort of swimming by the end of the summer. She is almost a foot taller than last year. She really wants to go under water, but still doesn’t get the concept of having to hold her breath and her attempts resulted in choking on water multiple times.

Grayson obviously had to test the water temperature. Still pretty cold for him come in.

* I fixed the toilet yesterday. The flush handle had finally come completely off and pulling the tank cover to raise the flapper so it was flush was a bit to white trash for me, so I broke down and spent the 8 bucks on a replacement. Lets not forget, a new cushy seat. All these new things make it feel I’m using another persons restroom.

* Made homemade strawberry jelly last night. Got 2 batches (12 half pints) done. I think we still have another 2 batches left to make. We did this last year and have not purchased store bought jelly since.

* This week? It’s already starting out busy at work. I want to show you the progress on two tomato plants that I put in the newly harvested compost (nutrients do miracles). Electrical project? Wednesday I’ll be over at Sprout.

//Grab a shovel. I’ll see you in the backyard.

Monday Evening and DST

Daylight savings time threw me off on Sunday and my whole day was off, including writing this here blog post. By the time I was able to sit down it was 11pm and I was ready for bed.
*The weekend was a bust for playing outside with Zoe or messing around in the garden. It rained from Thursday until Sunday morning. Looking at the forecast on Wednesday, I told Stephanie I would do the floor in our bedroom. Beats what I would have done…sit on my butt watching tv. So Thursday, we went out and picked up the flooring. Friday evening was spent dismantling the bed, and moving furniture out of our room and cramming it in Grayson’s. I was able to remove the carpet and tack board on half the room, clean up and lay the new floor the same evening. Pretty easy. Just simple measuring and cutting and laying. Saturday, we ripped out the rest of the room and I continued laying. I didn’t run in any problem until I hit the vanity and closet. Angles and more angles. What. A. Pain. It took pretty much the entire Saturday to finish laying everything. I still have some molding left to put down, but everything is pretty much back in place and looking great.

* I don’t know about you, but who doesn’t like a good baseball fight?

I know I do, but apparently the Rangers front office is over it. A clip of this played at almost every home game forever. It doesn’t help that the opening day match up is with Chicago, and new skipper Robin Ventura.

* With the recent rain, and now the warmer weather the yard is sure to be growing at full strength soon. I was out this evening pulling some weeds and came across the borage in bloom, the cosmos had sprouted. I also found out that the angel’s trumpet/moonflower (Datura inoxia) is coming back. I didn’t pull the entire plant last year and just broke it off at the ground. I wonder if it was the mild winter, or it’s just a hardy plant for the area.

Monday Morning Scramble

* The Texas Rangers had their first spring training game Sunday, losing 6-1. The only score the Rangers had was a Mitch Moreland homer. Pretty sure that wrist of his is doing better since surgery.

* Grayson is on the verge of crawling. He can finally get his big in the air. After that he just rocks back and forth until he face plants in the ground. Right now his mode of mobility is just to roll around until he hits something. Friday we found him in front of the the dog door.

* Big catastrophe in the garden of the weekend. I’ll expand on that later this week. :(

* Had a big trash find yesterday. Found a busted tv stand by the curb. That was the find. It was a collection of old Disney movies of VHS. A month ago at the house next door I picked up two metal garden chairs. A little spray paint and they’ll look great.

* Zoe is love Strawberry Shortcake. She just can’t get enough.

* Dad came over to pickup a strawberry planter for mom. While here he saw my prison style hair cut I gave Biff last week. I don’t think he was impressed with it. To take Biff to get professionally cut, it costs just shy of one hundred dollars. I’ll stick to the prison style cut every couple of months.

Monday Morning Scramble

**Starting this week, check out Sprout Dispatch. I’ll be writing over there once a week. Most likely, every Wednesday. Its a collaborative work of three different gardeners coming together from 3 different points on the map, to discuss certain topics. Bookmark it, stick it in you RSS reader, and pass the word on to your friends.

* Not sure about you but I had a great weekend. Lots going on in the garden. Got some tomato plants transplanted in the ground. There are lots left. Don’t ask where they are going to go. I haven’t the slightest clue. The cucumbers and squash have sprouted. I finally got the rest of the mulch and dirt moved from the driveway. I need more mulch. Dad, can I borrow the truck again? :) The weeds in the front yard had started to take over, so Zoe and I got to work Saturday. Though, she ended up fishing for goldfish in the pond while I pulled weeds.

*We bought a bird feeder last week and I can already hear myself cursing the birds it will attract. Remember last year? The mockingbirds destroyed the near ripe ‘maters. I need a BB gun. Pronto.

*Cat Crack

* I found a new show on Neflix about 2 weeks ago. Prison Break. It premiered back in 2005 but I never saw interest in it. Well, needless to saw, I’ve become addicted to it. So much so, in the last two weeks I’ve managed to watch the first two seasons giving up sleep and garden time. This explains the lack of blog posts the last week.

* A guy that graduated from my high school won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. He graduated some 10 years before me, but apparently wore a Dickies tailored tuxedo, according the Star-Telegram. Fort Worth represent!

* Hearing the wife say I can expand the garden is like watching a fireworks display on the 4th of the July!
